Sometimes the person asking the most questions in their first few weeks is the person everyone is turning to a few months later.
They start out learning the warehouse, the equipment, and how the team works together. Then you start to notice the shift. They are catching things on their own, seeing how one decision affects the next, and needing less direction than they did not long ago.
They may be new to the live events industry, but it does not take years to make an impact.
That is the idea behind a new category in the 2027 Flex Awards: Rookie of the Year.
Why Flex Rental Solutions Added Rookie of the Year
When Flex began planning the 2027 Flex Awards, Rookie of the Year was created to recognize people who are new to the industry but are already becoming an important part of the teams around them.
That might show up in their skill, work ethic, attitude, curiosity, or willingness to learn. What matters is not how long they have been doing the work, but how they are showing up and contributing now.
They do not need the longest resume in the room. They need to be someone whose growth, effort, and contribution are already hard to miss.
Experience Is Not the Only Measure of Impact
Live events reward experience for good reason. There is a lot that can only be learned working through real shows, last-minute changes, packed warehouses, tight turnarounds, and the problems that never seem to happen at a convenient time.
But tenure does not tell the whole story.
Some people stand out early. They pay attention. They want to know why something is done a certain way, not just what they have been told to do. They take feedback, remember it, and come back better the next time.
They also learn from the people around them. The crew member who has seen the same problem ten times. The warehouse manager who knows what happens when one detail gets missed. The scheduler who can see three steps ahead. And sometimes, standing out is as simple as being prepared, following through, and becoming someone the rest of the team knows they can count on.
What Does a Rookie of the Year Look Like?
There is no single role that defines a great rookie.
In the warehouse, it might be someone who picks up the prep and return process quickly and starts seeing how individual pieces of equipment fit into the larger job. As they get more familiar with AV inventory management, they begin to understand what is available, what is committed, what needs attention, and why accurate information matters beyond the warehouse.
In operations, it could be someone who starts seeing how crews, call times, and changing job requirements affect one another and begins planning ahead instead of simply reacting.
In sales, it might be a newer team member who listens closely, takes feedback well, and gets sharper with every quote.
The concept applies in any area of the industry. It is the new person who notices when something does not add up, stays prepared, asks the right question, or steps up before someone has to ask.
You Can See the Difference Early
A Rookie of the Year does not need to know everything yet. What matters is how quickly they are growing into the work.
Early on, they may have needed someone to walk them through a process. Now they can handle it on their own. Soon after that, they are the one answering a question, helping a newer teammate, or catching something before it becomes a problem.
That kind of progress is hard to miss.
You can tell when someone is starting to become more than the new person on the team. They are becoming someone the team trusts.
Who Is Making an Impact on Your Team?
Think about who has joined your team recently.
Who has gone from learning the ropes to becoming someone people trust with more? Who is already contributing at a level that feels bigger than their time in the industry would suggest?
They may still be early in their career, but you already know the team would notice if they were not there.
The 2027 Flex Awards are accepting nominations for Rookie of the Year, along with Warehouse Wizard, Sales Superhero, Operations Overlord, Scheduling Star, and Unsung Hero of the Year.
If someone new to the industry has already become someone your team counts on, put their name forward.
Nominate your Rookie of the Year for the 2027 Flex Awards by October 30, 2026.
